Craig has Superb Win!

IRISH JUNIOR OPEN 2013

The Irish Junior Open 2013 finals took place on Sunday 24th November at Sutton LTC. There were Girls and Boys finals from Under 13 to 19. In the Boys Under 19’s Ireland’s top 2 ranked players David Ryan and Michael Craig battled it out. David is in his first year at under 19 having come up from 17’s. Even with that he is ranked no. 2 in Europe having won the Nordic Junior Open last month. Michael Craig from Belfast is the Irish no. 2 and a prestigious talent which brought him through to victory in a surprise 3-0 victory 11-7,12-10,11-9. It was a superb victory over the no. 1 seed.
The match had some superb rallies many over 50 strokes with some fine retrieving and the athleticism shown by both players was amazing. Michael in his victory speech paid David the huge compliment of saying that the reason he plays squash was because of David. So Ireland is very lucky to have these 2 boys driving each other on, which is great for both their games. One thing for sure David won’t lack any motivation the next time he plays Michael and I am sure Michael knows that.
In the Girls U19 the Czech, Karolina Holinkova beat the Scot Claire Gadsby 3-1 in a very competitive match with the players again having some superb rallies. There was certainly no quarter shown between them as they drove to win the title. In the end Karolina won it 10-12, 11-4, 11–8, 11-5.
There were many other great matches with Ireland’s Ellie McVeigh having a great win in the U13’s beating Georgie Adderley from Scotland. Hannah Craig just lost in a tight 3-2 to Czech girl Kristyna Fialova. Griffin Gillanders from Fitzwilliam/Mount Pleasant also had a cracking match which she just lost in 5, 4-11, 10-12, 12-10, 117-7, 10-12.
The ‘Kangaroo’ aka Conor Moran from Sutton LTC. the host club had a superb victory in the U13 v Sam Buckley. Both Scott Gillanders and Oisin Logan has very close matches and lost very narrowly to Polish and Scottish boys respectively.
IRISH SQUASH would like to thank both Sutton LTC and Aer Lingus (ALSAA) for their facilities and hospitality over the weekend. A huge thanks also to Dermot & Pauline Dineen for their massive work in organising the tournament. Also a big thanks to all the volunteers from ALSAA & Sutton for their work in making the event go as smoothly as it did.
Finally the matches streamed live will be up on SPORTSLIVE AERTV for viewing on demand from Wednesday 27th November.
