IrelandIrish Squash Federation Ltd, Dublin, Ireland

This weekend saw the biggest weekend for Ireland’s junior squash players. With finals in both girls and boys from U11’s to U19’s, with nearly 100 players competing at Belfast Boat Club.

In the Under 19’s finals Hannah Craig from Belfast beat the defending champion Galway’s Fiona Power 3-0 a great result for the 17 year old. In the boys Hannah’s brother Michael who recently finished 6th in the British Open beat Nikita Gilevskiy from Dublin 3-0.
The other standout matches were in the Girls U15’s where Highfield’s Sophie O’Rourke beat Ellie McVeigh from Belfast Boat Club 3-0 with 2 matches going to 13-11. Also the 10 year old Denis Gilevskiy won the Under 13’s boys title beating Alex Smith 3-0. Denis is a player to watch in the coming years! The number1 seed Conor Moran got injured at semi final stage so Gavin L’Estrange got a walkover to face Scott Gilanders who was too strong winning 3-0. The all Sutton U 17 final was super match between Oisin Dunne and Luke Logan and went to 4 games. Luke won the first to 5 but Oisin settled into the match to win 3-1in the end. The up and coming under 11,s also had agreat tournament with a full draw of 16. Mt. Pleasant’s Jack O’Flynn was seeded 1 and didn’t disappoint. He won a great final vs clubmate Sean Murphy 2-1 with all the games very tight.
In the other girls matches Stephanie Ryan had a good win over Caitlin Telford in the Under 17, with her main rival Hannah Craig playing and winning the U19’s. Waterford’s Roisin Kirwan won the under 13’s over Ballynafeigh’s Hannah McGugan in a very tight match 3-1 with games going to the wire. The under 11’s was a repeat final between Dunhill from Waterford and Ballynafeigh with Aimee McConnell winning for the Northern club over Niamh Kirwan, a sister of Roisin.
So a super weekend of squash and well done to the organising committee led by Iain Hughes and assisted by Arlene and Michael McVeigh. Also special thanks to the Corbet family for traveling and presenting the U17 trophy to Oisin Dunne. (pictured on the home page)

The 2015 Junior Nationals see a special new trophy up for play. David Corbet was a fine young man and a very enthusiastic squash player. He was prematurely taken away from his family last year, at a very young age. Popular with everyone who met him, the
squash community mourned his passing greatly and the board of Irish Squash wanted to honour David in some small way. To put up a new trophy for the Boys U17 in the Nationals; a tournament David won some years ago;  felt like the right thing to do.
Pictured on the right is the new David Corbet Cup for the Under 17 championship.
