Home win for Byrne in the IACT Irish Junior Open.
18 year old Rory Byrne won his last
tournament as a Junior when taking the U19 boys competition at the
Irish Junior Open in Dublin. He had a hard fought final with Englishman
Oliver Dixon, eventually coming out a 3-1 winner
to claim the title. The promising Irish player from Carlow, who
plays his Squash in Fitzwilliam LTC in Dublin was delighted with
the win. This win will set up this very promising player for the
senior circuit.
The event which was hosted by the Westwood
club in Lepoardstown race course and Mount Pleasant LTC
was a huge success with over 160 entries from all across Europe
and even further a field.
In the Girls U-19 section, 14 year old Olivia
Blatchford from the United states claimed the title defeating
the number 1 seed Milou Van Der Heijden from the
Netherlands in the final. The young star who plays her squash in
Wycliffe college in the UK was delighted with the win.
Irish Squash President, John O’Connor,
said at the prize giving that the players had played with great
passion and determination all weekend and should be proud of themselves.
He went on to say that there was definitely some stars of the future
on display.
Boys U-19 Final:
Rory Byrne (IRL) v Oliver Dixon (ENG) 3-1 (4-9, 9-2, 9-3, 9-4).
Girls U-19 Final:
Olivia Blatchford (USA) v Milou Van Der Heijden (NED) 3-1 (9-6,
9-3, 4-9, 9-6).
