SELECTION CRITERIA FOR JUNIOR IRISH TEAMS 2002/03

(1) Players must be eligible to play for Ireland (see bylaw 7) and be under the relevant age on the final day of the competition and be selected by the selection committee.

(2) Selection committee comprises three members:-
The Junior Administrator, The Team Coach & The Team Manager

(3) Selection will be based on the ranking points gained from three Provincial Opens and the Irish Nationals in the appropriate age group.

(3) The Irish Open is a compulsory event but it will not contribute towards ranking points.

(4) If a player is unable to compete in a tournament (or complete all matches over a tournament weekend) due to illness/injury a doctors/physiotherapists certificate/letter must be submitted to Irish Squash.

(5) Fitness & Good Behaviour.
To ensure that players maintain the appropriate level of fitness and good behaviour the selection committee will also consider:-
1) General behaviour on and off court
2) Attendance at squad sessions
3) Commitment to training as designated by Team Coach

(7) When selecting a team to represent Ireland the selection committee will endeavour to select the strongest team, whilst maintaining fairness to all players, and therefore will in exceptional circumstances recommend to the full Irish Squash Council to override some of the set criteria.

NB Players wishing to be selected in two age groups must indicate their intentions before the start of the season in writing to the Junior Administrator c/o Irish Squash office and must play in ALL Provincial Opens and the Irish Nationals. Again the Irish Open will be a compulsory tournament but will not contribute towards ranking points. The selectors will decide in which age group players participate in all tournaments.

Please note the following important point concerning team selection

In the case of U-13 & U-15 Boys and Girls the Irish Nationals will not be counted for points as it will be held after the Home Internationals. Therefore the best three Provincial Opens will be counted. Players wishing to be considered for the U-15 or U-17 Europeans must play in the Irish Junior Nationals.

For the U-19 Girls all above applies but additional requirements will follow for the Junior Womens World Championships to be held in Egypt in July 2003.

Players should discuss the above with their coaches/managers and parents so that they are clear on what must be done.

New Format for Junior Open events.

This season's Junior Opens will attempt to allow entry to a greater number of players.

To facilitate this players ranked from 13 to 16 may be required to play preliminary matches at 5.30 on the Friday evening against those ranked 17 to 20. Losers will then play in the 'B' section and the winners will proceed to the 'A' section.
