Speedway
Courier Irish National Championships 2001
The
Speedway Courier
Irish Nationals sees a New Irish Champion in the Men's
and Madeline Perry regaining her title in the ladies.
Liam Kenny (number 2 seed) won 3/1 in convincing style 9-4;4-9;9-3;9-3
against holder Derek Ryan. This is his third successive Grand
Prix win and follows top finishes in Ulster and Leinster. Ryan will
have to wait another year for his 9th. Irish title. John Rooney
will be pleased to finish so high in the rankings after his disappointment
earlier in the season in missing out on a place in the Senior World
Championship team.
In the ladies final Ulster's Madeline Perry beat Louise
Finnegan, also by a 3/1 margin, 9-0;5-9;9-7;9-0. In
doing so madeline regained her Irish title (won last season by Eleanor
Lapthorne) and brought her tally to four ('97, '98 and 1999).
A notable feature of this year's Ladies event was the fact that
4 of the top 10 finishers are junior players.
Irish Squash is grateful for the continued generosity of sponsors
Speedway Couriers.
The
Ulster Senior Open
saw Liam Kenny scoring a double by adding the Ulster title to his
win last time out in Leinster. He beat Irish team mate Steve Richardson
in the final. In the Ladies 'A' Aisling McArdle earned her first
Grand Prix win of the season.
The
Leinster Senior Open
was
run off in Fitzwilliam and Mount Pleasant over the weekend of November
9 - 11 and record numbers served up some great squash. In the Men's
'A' Liam Kenny, fresh from his heroics at the Worlds, was a 3/0
winner over Munster Open runner-up John Abrahamse. In the Ladies
'A' Madeline Perry - Irish Number 1 - beat Munster Senior Open winner
Aisling Blake 3/0.
The
Munster Senior Open
in Cork over the weekend of October 12 - 14 got the Irish Squash
Grand Prix season off to a good start. In the ladies Aisling Blake
(Sligo) retained her title beating Eleanor Lapthorne by 3 games
to 1 in the final while in the Men's event Graham Stewart (Lloyd's)
made a winning return to the circuit and won 3/2 against John Abrahamse.
Irish

available for the highest points total overall from all ten events.
World Standard and Professional foreign based players will have
to play on the Tour but will receive exemptions from some events.

selection for the National Team. The Interprovincials will be
compulsory for all non professionals.
