15th World Women's Team Championships: 24/09/2006 to 30/09/2006 in Edmonton, Canada.

The Irish team of Madeline Perry (Captain), Aisling Blake, Laura Mylotte and Eleanor Lapthorne were seeded 9 and were in the same group as England (1), Hong Kong (8) and Austria (16). One the first day they lost 3-0 to England and beat Austria 3-0 in Day 2. They followed with a 2-1 win against Hong Kong so move into the quarter finals! Unfortunately number 1 Madeline Perry had not made a full recovery from her bout of food poisoning and they went down 3-0 to Netherlands in the quarter-finals and then New Zealand. They finished their campaign with a win against France in the 7-8 playoff.

Irish No. 1 Madeline Perry the world no.6 withdraw herself from the Championships due to the need to rest prior to necessary knee rehabilitation work. In her absence the other players made a gallant but doomed effort to fight off the inevitable fall in ranking. On the positive side, however, Mylotte, Lapthorne and Owens got the opportunity to play the very best in Women's opposition and can only benefit from the experience. Hopefully Laura Mylotte will recover speedily from her injury and that she and the others, including Madeline Perry, are looking forward to the World Championships next season.

Many thanks to Gerry Callanan who sent us this report on his take of the teams' efforts on the final day of the championships:

" Ireland 5th In European Mens Championships
The Irish men's team finished an outstanding performance at the champioships by beating Germany in the 5/6 playoff thus ensuring there promotion back into the premier division for next year's event in Rimini. Liam Kenny the Irish no 1 beat the German no 1 and European Junior champion Simon Rosner in a gruelling 5 game match which lasted 85 minutes. Kenny playing superb squash wore out his opponent who eventuallly was overcome by cramp and altough valiantly finished the match was not really able to compete fully in the 5th. Angus Kirkland the 35 year old former English professional was next on at number 4 string match. Kirkland now domiciled in Ireland and working full-time for Irish Squash playing in his first championship gave his all to beat Jens Schoor 9-0 in the fifth. The Stage was now set for Irish Squash Legend Derek Ryan at No 2 and earning his 152nd. cap for Ireland to make his appearance much to the delight of the vocal Irish support. Ryan used all of his now World renowned racket skills to turn what should have been a tough match against Simon Barker a former World top forty player into a virtual demonstration. Ryan played every shot in the book including the sublime top-spin drop return of serve he had practiced so hard on all week to devasting effect. Ryan beat Barker only losing 10 points in the process to give the Delighted Irish Team a famous victory. John Rooney the Irish no 3 undefeated all week and looking back to his best after a long layoff due to injury did not have to play his dead rubber match. However such is the committment of this Irish Team that Rooney and Arthur Gaskin (reserve) were straight on court with the Irish Coach Eoin Ryan to get in some extra training while the Irish Supporters headed off to celebrate the Victory.
The Irish Ladies without the no 1 Madeline Perry and Laura Mylotte due to injury put up a spirited performance to lose the 9/10 playoff to Wales.

World Team Championship 2005:

The Irish Men's Team at the World Championships in Pakistan wasLiam Kenny, Arhur Gaskin, Brian Byrne and Neal Murphy.

Irish World's Senior Men's Team 2005

Ireland ended their campaign with a win against Iran to finish in 19th spot. It proved a hard slog for the Irish at this championship where we have our youngest team for many years. World top 50 player Liam Kenny has won 2 of his 4 matches so far but it's been a struggle for the others on the team to pick up points.
First year pro-player Arthur Gaskin has had more experience of the jump in standard required at the top but even he and former club-mate Brian Byrne (both from the Carlow Club) are finding the going tough. Like Neal Murphy (pictured below during his match with Chris Gordon U.S.A.), who is earning his first cap at senior international level, these three will be the first to admit that it's a whole new 'ball game' at this level.
Here's hoping that the experience gained by all the players in this event will make them even more determined to keep up their efforts to excel in the future.
