The Nordic Junior Open, a Super Series event is held in Malmo, Sweden and Irish Squash had 14 Juniors taking part.
Scott Gillanders lost the final of the Nordic Open 3-1 against European No 1 Victor Byrtus. Scott had an amazing tournament
beating European no.2 Yannick Wilhelmi 3-2 in the semi final. Byrtus was a step too far on this occasion after a poor start Scott won a hard fought second game and despite finishing the stronger in the third – he had allowed Byrtus too great a lead – lost 11- 7. The fourth ran away from Scott quickly and he never re-established himself. It was a good performance but a great performance was needed.
Dylan Moran was the other stand out Irish Junior, managing to win all his matches in the Boys U11 category, 3-0. In the final he beat Philipe Georgiev of Bulgaria in the battle for first place, with a 
convincing 3- 0!
Emma Dineen got to play on the glass court and a podium finish of 3rd in U11’s
This tournament started well for the Irish with 9 players from the 14 Irish players reaching the quarter-finals. Probably unprecedented and demonstrating our strength in depth.

The PSA, with the full support and co-operation of the WSF, has
developed a website (“The Call”) that offers a number of video-clips
from squash matches with the intention of educating both referees and
players alike to understand the latest thinking about the Rules of
Squash and their application.
The primary aim of this website is to enable referees and players to
view video clips that illustrate the two-fold obligation of all players
(a) to clear the ball after hitting a return, and (b) to make every
effort to play the ball. Reducing the number of stoppages in a match
because of lets will increase the flow of play and make the game more
enjoyable to watch.
PSA’s “Mission Statement” is as follows:
“It is the goal and responsibility of every player and referee to make each game we participate in, flow to
the best of our ability, helping to improve the image and watchability of our uniquely exciting, dynamic and
demanding sport”
The examples of the interpretation of the rules shown on The Call aim to help achieve the goals as
described in the above statement. Another aim for the channel is to help to create discussion points while
developing a consistent interpretation and application of the rules around the world.
The great news is that the channel is accessible to anyone who wants to view it in order to see how the
game is being interpreted at the PSA level. The overriding goal is of course to improve the flow of the game
at all levels.
On the home page you will see the most recent activities, under “Headlines” you will see popular collections
and videos: you can click these to go directly to the relevant video clips. Alternatively, you can click on
“Collections”, which will take you to each rule and provide a description of the rule, or click “Explore” which
will take you to all of the videos which are appropriately tagged.
Video clips can be viewed in two viewers: HTML5 or the Silverlight app. The latter allows you to see
associated keywords and videos. You can change the viewer in the top right corner of the Video or Explore
pages.
The CALL is an ongoing project and videos will be continually added, changed and adapted as determined
by consensus.

There were 85 players playing in 9 events from U11 to U19’s.

The first senior tour event for this season with The Curragh Senior Open 2014 took place from Friday 12th September to the 14th September.
The top seeds were Brian Byrne at no. 1 and no. 2 Michael Craig who has had a very busy summer, having played the Commonwealth games in July and then being part of the successful U19 Ireland team that came 7th in the World Championships in August which took place in Namibia.
Again we had -a young player and a very experienced player at no. 3 & 4 seeds in Ballymena’s Steve Richardson and Michael Convoy. There are 76 players entered in 1 women’s with Ciara Moloney as no. 1 seed and 4 men’s sections. Ciara won her 1st senior cap at the Europeans last May where she played in the 3/4th place match vs the Czech Republic where she played superbly in her debut.

The third running of this first senior tournament of the new squash season took place last weekend at The Curragh Squash Club at The Curragh Camp in Kildare.
It featured a good mixture of seasoned seniors and high-ranked juniors.
In the men’s A event Michael Craig of Ulster returned to defend his title won last year in a hard-fought final against Sean Conroy. This year Michael and Sean had to be content with third and fourth places respectively. Michael met in-form fellow Ulster man Steve Richardson in his semi-final where the much older man showed all of his experience and great fitness and stamina to come through against Michael who is still a junior and played on the Irish junior team in the recent World Junior Championship in Namibia. Sean Conroy was beaten by Brian Byrne in their semi-final. The final went to 4 games but in the end the super-fit and agile Byrne proved too much for Richardson.
In the ladies event Ciara Moloney successfully defended her title coming through against fellow Carlow player and top junior Casey Luther in the final.
A notable return to Irish tournaments was Ulster man Gordon Harpur who played in the men’s B section. He just failed to qualify for the A/B playoff by losing a marathon 2-3 battle to Curragh player Neal Murphy.
The men’s C section was won by 13-year-old Sutton junior Conor Moran in defeating Mark Furlong, who plays for Celtic in Waterford, in the final by 3-1.
Veteran Donal Kelly of Mount Pleasant won the men’s D final in a close 3-2 final versus Noel Walsh of Freshford.
