Accessibility statement for squashireland.ie
Squash Ireland | squashireland.ie | Last updated: August 2026
This accessibility statement applies to squashireland.ie.
This website is run by Squash Ireland. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
- zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this website is
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:
- 13 partner, sponsor and provincial association logos have generic alt text rather than the organisation name
- some links inside navigation dropdown panels use vague text such as ‘Watch Now’ or ‘Read More’ without descriptive names for screen reader users
- featured article titles inside navigation dropdown panels are marked up as headings, which affects the page heading structure
- two content areas (the utility bar and the hero section) fall outside ARIA landmark regions
- three decorative SVG images require alt attribute corrections
- one element requires manual colour contrast verification before go-live

Technical information about this website’s accessibility
Squash Ireland is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the EU Web Accessibility Directive 2016/2102, as transposed into Irish law by the European Union (Accessibility of Websites and Mobile Applications of Public Sector Bodies) Regulations 2020.
Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
Logo alt text (13 images). Partner, sponsor and provincial association logos carry generic alt text rather than the organisation name. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text content) and 2.4.4 (Link purpose (in context)). We plan to update all logo alt text in the WordPress Media Library when the site goes live.
Vague navigation link text. Six ‘Watch Now’ links and six ‘Read More’ links inside navigation dropdown panels do not have descriptive names for screen reader users. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 (Link purpose (in context)). We plan to add aria-label attributes to give each link a unique, descriptive name when the site goes live.
Navigation dropdown heading structure. The featured article title inside each of the six navigation dropdown panels is marked up as a heading, affecting the logical heading structure of the page. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and relationships). We plan to change these to paragraph elements when the site goes live.
ARIA landmark regions. Two content blocks (the utility bar and the hero section) fall outside ARIA landmark regions. Screen reader users navigating by landmark cannot reach all page content. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and relationships). We plan to wrap these elements in the appropriate landmark elements when the site goes live.
Decorative image markup. Three SVG images require either an empty alt=”” attribute with role=”presentation”, or correct descriptive alt text. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text content). We plan to update these when the site goes live.
Disproportionate burden
Squash Ireland does not claim disproportionate burden for any of the issues listed above. All outstanding items are planned for remediation.
Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
PDFs and other documents. The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards. If you need any document in an accessible format, please contact us and we will provide an alternative.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We carried out a full accessibility audit of squashireland.ie in June 2026 and completed a funded remediation programme between June and August 2026. The following issues have been addressed:
- Language of page (WCAG 3.1.1): the HTML lang attribute was incorrectly set to en-US and has been corrected to en, ensuring screen readers apply correct English language rules.
- Skip to main content (WCAG 2.4.1): a skip link is now the first focusable element on every page, allowing keyboard and screen reader users to bypass repeated navigation.
- Keyboard-accessible navigation (WCAG 2.1.1, 4.1.2): all six top-level navigation items previously used non-interactive anchor elements with no ARIA attributes. Navigation now uses correctly labelled <button> elements with named ARIA regions; keyboard users can access all navigation.
- Alt text for linked images (WCAG 1.1.1): homepage quick-link tiles and news thumbnails have been updated with descriptive alt text. Partner and sponsor logo alt text is in progress (see above).
- Heading structure (WCAG 1.3.1): the site previously had an empty H1 (logo with no alt text); a logical H1 is now present in the content area. Navigation dropdown headings have been improved.
- Non-descriptive link text (WCAG 2.4.4): the homepage ‘Read More’ link has been updated with descriptive text. Navigation panel links are in progress (see above).
- Accessibility statement: this statement has been published at /accessibility-statement/ and is linked from the site footer.
The remaining outstanding issues are listed in the non-accessible content section above. We plan to address all outstanding items when the site goes live, and will update this statement accordingly.
