Cannon Kirk GillenMarkets Irish Squash Open 2024 – Player Preview – Hannah Craig

Having previewed our men’s senior no.1, Sam Buckley, yesterday (here), we now turn our attention to our women’s senior no.1, Lisburn’s Hannah Craig.

Hannah Craig is in the midst of a steep ascent up the world rankings since turning pro last autumn and has been prolific on the pro circuit, turning heads and establishing herself at every opportunity.

Just a few months after turning pro, Hannah claimed a magnificent silver in the Costa Rica Open in November. She carried her terrific form into the Irish Senior Nationals in February, when she defeated international teammate and defending champion Breanne Flynn in a thrilling contest to claim her second senior national title.

Hannah has taken her game to new heights in recent months and just this week has reached 87th in the the World Rankings, staking her claim for a seat at the elite table of global squash.

Based in the US, Hannah has already made the trip back to European soil as she reached the quarter finals of the Women’s World Championship Qualifying event in Nantes, where she lost an hour-long titanic battle in 5 games to no.1 seed and eventual winner Marta Dominguez.

Hannah is also set to don the Irish colours in Zurich this weekend, something she insists is a very proud moment, as she looks set to be a pivotal figure for team Ireland in the ESF Women’s European Team – Division 3 campaign in which Ireland are expected to gain promotion.

Craig takes on world no.167 Hayley Ward in R1 and will be hoping to dispatch her South African opponent in front of the TV cameras as her game is set to be the first of 4 back-to-back Irish games on Premier Sports 2 (Sky 419 & VM 417) with action set to get underway at 5pm on Tuesday 23rd April

Marrying form, potential and the perfect attitude, could we see a deep run from Hannah on home soil?
