The biggest team squash event of the year for the Under 15’s and Under 17’s (boys and girls), will take place this week in Prague. The best players in these age groups, from all over Europe will be there. There is a record number of entries in the Championships this year, with 21 teams in Under 15’s and 20 teams in the under 17’s competing.
The players who will represent Ireland in this event are:
The Under 17s team will be represented by Sam Buckley (Leinster) who has made great progress this year; finished second in German JO (Super series) and won Irish Junior Nationals U17; Scott Gillanders (Leinster) was a finalist in Nordic JO and Swiss JO. Both these boys are in the top 10 in Europe. Unfortunately, Conor Moran (Leinster) has an injury and has to withdraw. This is very hard luck on Conor. who is replaced by Donal O’Shea (Connacht), who has been playing great squash all season.
The girls on the team are – Sophie O’Rourke (Munster), who had a great season winning the Swiss JO (which moved her in the top 10 in European rankings) and she also took part in the Senior women’s team championship in Helsinki two weeks ago. Emma Lundy, has had a super season on the junior tour which cemented her place on the team. The team is seeded 3rd and is drawn with France, Spain, Norway and Poland.
The Under 15’s team is Denis Gilevskiy (Leinster), Alex Smith (Leinster), Ansh Pahuja (Ulster), Brenda Li (Leinster) and Hannah McGuggan (Ulster). All those players will represent Ireland in a European team championship for the first time. However all of them have experience of playing for Ireland in the Five Nations Championships before. Ireland are seeded 5th and drawn with Wales, Slovakia and Norway.
Both teams are flying to Prague on Wednesday 10th of May accompanied by National Junior coaches David Noone, Ed Dunne and manager Helen Reapy.
We wish all of them good luck.
