Finals day for the Senior National championships, which took place at Fitzwilliam LTC, in Dublin this weekend.
With 5 events – Mens Over 35 and 40’s, Womens Over 35’s and the Womens A and Mens A championship, there was some super squash over the 3 days.
The women’s final saw 14 time Irish Champion and world number 14, Madeline Perry beat Sligo’s Aisling Blake 3-0 in a very convincing display. Madeline the 37 year old veteran belied her years and was ruthless in this display. As fit as she has ever been, she was just too good for Aisling, the 2013 Irish Champion on the day.
In the men’s final; an all Carlow affair Irish number one Arthur Gaskin had a super match versus his old club mate Brian Byrne. Brian now based in Claremorris with Arthur a full time pro based in New York this was a bit an intriguing contest. With the match at 1 all and Brian 8-5 up in the 3rd, it looked as if Brian was in control but Arthur reacted positively and took control again, to win the vital 3rd game and then duly won the 4th – 11 – 4 to close out the match and win his 3rd Irish Championship in 4 years.
In the over 40’s section, Rob Staunton the defending champion had a very tight match over David Ayerst from Civil Service, Belfast which went to 5 games with Rob just coming through 3-1. Rob’s brother Nick had a great battle with Fitzwilliam’s Kevin Moore, Kevin prevailing 3-0. A really super win for Kevin, very well done! In the Women’s over 35 Sarah Berekley from Dublin beat fellow Dubliner Suzanne Swan in a trilling game 3-2.
