Day 4
Ireland’s men were 2 points from winning Division 2 today, in Herning. Michael Craig, the hero vs. Denmark yesterday was playing Jaakko Vahamaa, leading 2-0 and 9-8 in points. If he wins the match 3-0, Ireland win the tie overall on countback. Jaakko keeps his cool and wins the next 3 points to give Finland the point they needed to win overall. Earlier Arthur Gaskin and Brian Byrne lost 3-0 & 3-1 respectively. Sean Conroy from Dublin, winning his first cap won 3-1, after a long injury break in the game during the 4th game.
So all down to Michael Craig, once again. He played superbly and was in control for most of the match. In the decisive 3rd game he led early on, took the lead 9-8 and was in pole position. But credit to Jaakko who was patient and duly won the next 3 points to win the match for Finland on countback 8-6.
So a 2nd in Division 2 and promotion to Division 1 for the men and a bronze medal for the women. – A super European Championships for Irish Squash!!

WOMEN
Day 4 – Bronze Medal v Denmark

Ireland’s women’s team had a super win over hosts Denmark this morning 2-1. Number 2 Aisling Blake was on first v Sally Skaarenborg. Playing some beautifully controlled squash Aisling was always in control. She won 3-0 in some style. Irish
number 1 Madeline Perry was on next v Line Hansen. Again it was the same story with Madeline playing some superb squash. Line however refused to go away and saved 3 game balls in the first game before going down 13-11. The next 2 games were tight enough, but Madeline using all her experience pulled away in each, to win them 11-9, 11-8.
With the bronze medal secured the 3rd tie was a dead rubber, however Carlow’s Ciara Moloney played Mathilide Laundsen. It was a short match with the Dane winning 2-0.
So a 3rd medal in 4 years for Ireland’s women’s squash team – a superb performance!

Day 3 – Semi Final v France

superbly the first game went to Serme 11-6. Madeline took the second in a close 12-10. The 3rd & 4th were very close with Serme just having the slight edge, especially with her short game. She won them 11-8, 11-6 so won 3-1.
Next was Irish no. 2 Aisling Blake v Coline Aumard. Aisling won the first well, 11-6,. With very close rallies and nothing to choose between them. Aumard won the next 2 games – 11-5, 12-10. Blake won the 4th 11-7. In the 5th Aumard stayed ahead, to close it out 11-6.No. 3 Ciara Moloney didn’t have to play as France were 2-0 up.
